Welcome to Sunburst Success

Sunburst Success is a newsletter for freelancers, sole traders, and small business owners in the UK, set up to help more people shine with confidence and inspiration.

I’m Han, a freelance proofreader. I set up my business after the pandemic and work in the publishing industry, with connections to the Society of Young Publishers and Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. I got my start by completing the Enterprise programme of the Prince’s Trust (now King’s Trust).

Through the Enterprise programme, I discovered a passion for setting goals and completing them. I have my own system that works for my neurodivergent mind, but I’ve also explored different systems, especially the use of SMART goals.

Since setting up my business, I’ve mentored people through the Society of Young Publishers and University of Southampton; now, I want to bring a similar energy and knowledge to a newsletter to reach more people.

How Sunburst Success works

Every month, I send out an email with these sections:

  • my thoughts, what I’m focusing on in my business right now.
  • breaking down a single goal into actionable steps or options
  • a feature on a business resource, website, or book
  • a quick tip about a business resource or website I use
  • a featured charitable organisation I support and how I’m currently engaging with them

My pledge

Sunburst Success is my passion project. It’s something I’ve wanted to create for some time, and in a world of generative AI, influencers, and climate change, I want to make sure it truly gets a chance to shine.

So here’s my pledge:

  • I will not use generative AI in any way or form. I have rejected using AI in the creation of the newsletter and this website, and will continue to reject using AI in marketing.
  • I will do my utmost best to create and maintain Sunburst Success in the most environmentally friendly way.
  • I will bring attention to organisations that I am passionate about and encourage people to learn more about them.

With this in mind, below is a list of the software and resources I’m using.

Business resources and tools

All links marked with an asterisk are affiliate links, which means I may earn a commission if you click the link and purchase anything (including subscriptions); this helps me to pay for the hosting of Sunburst Success.

EcoSend

EcoSend is the email newsletter provider I’ve chosen. They are the most eco-friendly provider I could find, and I’ve personally reached out to them to check about their usage of AI.

You can sign up for free if your newsletter has less than 500 subscribers and you don’t need the ability to schedule emails in advance:

* The button above is a sponsored link as part of EcoSend’s partnership programme. If you use this link and later make a purchase with EcoSend, I may earn commission at no additional cost to you. You are welcome to search for EcoSend’s website without clicking the link if you prefer.

IONOS Web Hosting

I use IONOS to host this website through WordPress. However, I have steered clear of all AI tools (no matter how much they push them). I always feed back to IONOS that I do not want to use generative AI and have requested the ability to turn off these tools completely.

Ecosia web browser & search engine

I use Ecosia as both my web browser and search engine when working. After years of using a combination of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, I decided that with this new era I also wanted to commit to using a more environmentally friendly web browser.

Ecosia supports reforestation efforts by planting trees around the world. You can use the search engine instead of Google and Bing on any web browser, which is what I used to do.

Proton Mail

I use Proton Mail as a privacy-focused email provider, so any emails you send to me as replies to newsletters will be secure. Outside of EcoSend, this is the only way I can see any of your details (the email address you sign up with), so you’re as secure as possible.

I also use Proton Drive and Proton Docs for drafting the newsletter.
